POSITION SUMMARY

Warren Wilson College is seeking a tech savvy individual with the right aptitude and experience/education for an exciting new position as a Services Technician. The Services Technician will balance time between both the User Services and Systems teams within the ITS department. Their functions include providing relief for the Systems Administrator on specifically assigned projects and tasks such as server maintenance, account modifications, network operations, and system upgrades. In addition, this person will be responsible for resolving a variety of incoming user support requests and department needs. They will provide continuity for progressing on more in-depth and longer term issues as well as assistance to student workers in ITS. This role will be primarily technical, focused work with a smaller proportion of client-facing time.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Operations and Support

  • Efficiently respond to and resolve assigned support tickets including computer repair, issue troubleshooting, research and new process creation where applicable.
  • Facilitate improvements, updates, and rollouts to campus IT infrastructure as directed.
  • Respond to critical outages including after-hours emergencies in coordination with Systems Administrator.
  • Responsible for campus network printing in coordination with Business Services office and third party vendors.
  • Research and recommend creative, and where possible automated, approaches for tasks. Identify approaches that leverage the College’s resources and provide economies of scale.

Maintenance

  • Under supervision from Systems Administrator, assist with maintenance of server operating systems, patches, and security on a regular basis. Configure and/or add new services as directed.
  • Tasks also include network maintenance such as switch configuration, cabling, closet organization, and line terminations with assistance from ITS students.
  • Assist with building and monitoring department alert systems to accomplish proactive support in cooperation with Systems Administrator and/or third party vendor support.

Documentation and Communication

  • Determine and actively document work processes and techniques for common tasks.
  • Major work component is to assist and cross-train with other areas within the department.
  • Communicate and cooperate effectively with ITS staff and campus departments.
  • Provide exceptional and timely customer service to all internal and external stakeholders.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Relevant technical degree, certifications, or equivalent workplace experience required.
  • Wide-ranging hands-on knowledge of computing hardware, operating systems, drivers, and software required.
  • Fundamental experience with networking including topology, switches, access points, client configuration and particularly cable wiring/termination is preferred.
  • Printer systems experience also highly desirable.
  • Experience with servers, virtualization, hosting, scripting, programming all valuable but not required.
  • Strong sense of initiative and ability to work independently. Excellent communication, research, & documentation skills. Other critical characteristics include attention to detail and tolerance for shifting to sudden urgent needs and/or working under pressure.
