The undergraduate Creative Writing Department at Warren Wilson College in Asheville, North Carolina welcomes applications for the position of Visiting Creative Writer in Residence for the 2026 January residency and the spring Term 3.

Application for the Visiting Creative Writer in Residence is available only to alumni of the Warren Wilson College MFA Program for Writers, including those who received the degree during the years the program was at Goddard College.

This is a three-month part-time teaching position, following the MFA winter residency and the undergraduate Term 3 calendar, with an anticipated start date of January 1, 2026 and an end date of March 15, 2026. Compensation for this part-time position is a salary of $5,000. While housing in our Guest House may be available depending on availability, please be aware no relocation assistance is available for this position. Limited meal tickets for the cafeteria are also available as a benefit. There is an option to teach the Term 3 portion of the course online, but the position requires in-person attendance at the January residency. The Department of Creative Writing is a dynamic and supportive learning community, with a focus on revision, research, and ethical issues within the discipline, as well as experimentation with form, genre, and style. The mission of the Creative Writing major is to provide opportunities for students to create original work and to expand their understanding of contemporary literature within a community of creative writers.

Responsibilities

  • Teach one sections of the undergraduate MFA Residency course, which takes place during the January MFA for Writers Residency and the seven weeks of the Term 3 of the undergraduate calendar in Spring semester 2026
  • Participate in departmental meetings and events as available

Minimum Qualifications

  • MFA from the Warren Wilson College MFA Program for Writers (or Goddard College)
  • Teaching experience (at any level, including community settings)
  • Experience with and/or commitment to advancing diversity, equity and inclusion in learning spaces. For instance, experience incorporating inclusive teaching modalities and working with diverse student populations)

Preferred Qualifications

  • One or more semesters of teaching experience in higher education

For the MFA Residency portion of the course, which will run from the evening of January 2 through the evening of January 12, 2026, the Visiting Creative Writer-in-Residence would be in charge of the undergraduate Creative Writing Residency class. Together with that class, this Visiting Creative Writer-in-Residence would attend all faculty lectures in the mornings of our residency, evening programming such as faculty and graduate readings, along with the graduate festivities during the residency. Undergraduate students will be paired with a graduate student mentor who will meet with them during the residency to discuss their creative writing and goals. The Visiting Creative writer in Residence will also hold a discussion class or workshop for these creative writing undergraduates in the afternoon (when students cannot go to the MFA Residency program). Students thus discuss what they have learned in the morning lectures together and/or do a workshop session for their own writing. This portion of the course must be taught in person.

In addition, the Visiting Creative Writer in Residence would hold a virtual meeting pre-class meeting sometime in November or December 2025, at the convenience of the Visiting Creative Writer in Residence.

For the Term 3 portion of the class, the Visiting Creative Writer in Residence will offer a seven-week workshop-style course that also includes readings, discussion, and assignments that follow and respond to what the students have learned in the residency.
